Laser business articles love big monthly numbers, and almost none of them cite data. This guide starts with what official sources say about craft-seller income, then prices every running cost we could source. It ends with a payback template you fill in with your own numbers.
Quick answer
- There is no official data on laser-business earnings. We found no xTool or Glowforge owner survey with income figures either.
- Etsy's 2021 seller census: for 32% of sellers the creative business is their sole occupation; for the rest it brings about 10% of household income.
- Etsy's 2025 sales divided by its 5.6 million sellers is about $1,868 per seller per year. That is gross sales, not profit.
- Running costs are small: a 40 W-class diode costs about 4 cents an hour in US electricity; CO2 tube wear is $0.03–0.29 per hour, depending on lifespan.
- Your time is the biggest cost. In our illustration a $74.99 map pays back a $3,199.99 laser in about 5 months at 10 sales a month before you pay yourself (and before frame, finish and packaging costs), and in about 39 months if each map takes 2 hours of your time at the US median craft-artist wage.
- Taxes: Poland's unregistered-activity limit is 10,813.50 zł per quarter in 2026. Germany's small-business VAT limits are €25,000 (previous year) and €100,000 (current year).
What does the data say about craft-seller income?
Etsy's Global Seller Census from 2021 is the most recent seller survey we could open (6,407 sellers, margin of error ±1.25%). 84% of sellers run a business of one and 95% work from home. 71% consider their shop a business, and half say financial challenges prompted them to start. 32% say their creative business, on and off Etsy, is their sole occupation. For everyone else it contributes 10% of household income on average: 9.3% in the US and 12% in Germany.
Etsy's results for 2025 show $10,460.7 million in marketplace sales (GMS) and 5.6 million active sellers. Divided, that is about $1,868 per seller per year. It is a mean of gross sales, before fees, materials and time, and it says nothing about the typical shop. Etsy Inc. reports a consolidated take rate (revenue as a share of GMS) of 24.2% for 2025.
| Source | Figure | What it really measures |
|---|---|---|
| Etsy Seller Census 2021 | 32% have their creative business as sole occupation | Self-reported, all crafts, 2021 |
| Etsy Seller Census 2021 | 10% of household income for the rest (US 9.3%, Germany 12%) | A share, not an amount |
| Etsy FY2025 results | ≈ $1,868 GMS per active seller (our calculation) | Gross sales, a mean |
| US Bureau of Labor Statistics | Median $55,290 a year ($26.58/h) for craft and fine artists; $46,080 for craft artists (May 2025) | Wages of employees; 58% of the occupation is self-employed |

Why vendor income stories are not a forecast
What exists about laser earnings are blog posts by companies that sell lasers. They cite no data, and they disagree with each other. OMTech says a laser pays for itself in 1–3 months; The Maker's Chest, a laser retailer, says 12–18 months. Neither shows how.
| Who | Claim | Evidence given |
|---|---|---|
| OMTech (Mar 2026) | "Sarah" grew from about $1,000 to $6,000–8,000 a month; ROI in 1–3 months | None cited |
| xTool (Apr 2026) | $120–190 profit per hour, depending on the product | None cited |
| Trotec | Laser time at "$1 per minute"; viable with "roughly one hundred items per week" | Industry rule of thumb |
| Monport (Oct 2024) | "$20,000 to $50,000 a year"; examples up to "$180,000 per year" | None cited |
| The Maker's Chest (Sep 2025) | $1,000–5,000 a month part-time; net margin 15–30%; payback 12–18 months | Anecdotal |
| GeekExtreme (updated Sep 2026) | $1,000–10,000 a month | Mostly vendor blogs |
Vendor and affiliate claims, quoted as published. They are not facts about what you will earn.
Read these as marketing. The honest statement is that nobody publishes what laser owners actually earn, so you have to calculate your own numbers.
What does a laser cost to buy?
Machine prices vary with sales, so treat these as a snapshot from the makers' US stores. They are the "machine" line in your payback calculation.
| Machine | Type | Price as displayed |
|---|---|---|
| Monport Reno 45 Basic | CO2 | $1,149.99 |
| Monport Reno 65 | CO2 | $1,599.99 (list $2,799.99) |
| Creality Falcon2 Pro kit (22/40/60 W) | Enclosed diode | $1,999.00 |
| OMTech Polar Lite 55 W | Desktop CO2 | $2,199.99 |
| xTool P2S 55 W | Desktop CO2 | $2,999.00 |
| OMTech AF2028-80 (20×28 in bed) | CO2 | $3,199.99 (list $5,099.99) |
| OMTech Pro 2440 80 W, with chiller and rotary | CO2 | $6,499.99 |
US store prices checked 24 September 2026; EU prices differ. Ventilation, software and first materials come on top.
Setup costs are harder to source. Creality's blog puts ventilation systems at $500–1,500, without citing where that comes from. Before you compare machines, see which laser engraver to buy in 2026.
Tubes, lenses and filters: the running costs
A glass CO2 tube wears out, and how fast depends on how hard you drive it. Monport gives the clearest claim for its Reno 65: 4,500 hours below 40% power, 2,700 hours at 40–70% and 1,300 hours above 70%. OMTech claims 11,000–12,000 hours for its tubes, and xTool says its P2S tube runs 6,000–8,000 hours before power drops to 70%. The claims span a factor of nine, so the chart spreads one tube price over each claimed lifespan.
| Item | Price | Lifespan or interval (vendor claim) |
|---|---|---|
| CO2 tube, 80 W (OMTech EFR) | $379.99 | 1,300–12,000 h depending on vendor and power |
| CO2 tube, 40 W / 55 W / 100 W (OMTech) | $149.99 / $319.99 / $529.99 | as above |
| ZnSe focus lens, 20 mm (Cloudray) | $20.00 (25 mm: $45–85) | replace when damaged |
| xTool desktop purifier filter pack | $11.99 (discounted, as displayed) | – |
| xTool smoke purifier pre-filter, 5 pcs | $4.99 | every 7–15 days or when 70% of the surface is dusty |
| xTool SafetyPro AP2 filters | not shown | 100–600 h depending on filter type |
Prices as displayed on 24 September 2026. Diode lasers have no tube; for them this line is mostly lenses and filters.
Even the worst case, $0.29 per hour, is small next to a sale price. The tube matters more as a cash event: a $379.99 bill arrives at once, so keep it in your reserve.
How much electricity does a laser use?
Creality lists the maximum machine power of its Falcon2 Pro: 120 W for the 22 W laser and 240 W for the 40 W laser. At full draw for one hour, and with official 2025–2026 electricity prices, that costs:
| Diode class (max draw) | Poland, home | Poland, business | Germany, home | Germany, business | US, home |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 22 W (0.12 kWh per hour) | 0.14 zł | 0.18 zł | €0.046 | €0.039 | $0.022 |
| 40 W (0.24 kWh per hour) | 0.28 zł | 0.36 zł | €0.093 | €0.078 | $0.044 |
Our calculation. Prices: Eurostat second half of 2025 (PL home 1.1505 zł/kWh, DE home €0.3869; business band excl. VAT: PL 1.5191 zł, DE €0.3258); EIA US residential July 2026, 18.31¢/kWh.
For a CO2 laser we found no sourced power figure. None of the OMTech, xTool or Monport product pages we opened list consumption. Use the formula instead: add up the ratings of the laser, chiller, exhaust fan and air pump from your manuals, then multiply kW × hours × price per kWh. Electricity will be a small line either way; fees and materials are much larger.
What hourly rate should you use?
Two different hours matter: machine time and your own time. Published rules of thumb mix them up.
- Trotec (laser maker) says the industry calculates laser time at about $1 per minute, with labor at $40 an hour. Its example: a $1.50 pen blank, a 15-second engraving, a $15 retail price.
- OMTech suggests $25–50 per hour for standard work and $50–150 per hour for advanced setups.
- Makers on the Sawmill Creek forum (2013) quoted from $50–60 to $150–200 an hour, or $0.80 to $6 per minute.
- Craftybase (software vendor) works backwards: desired monthly income ÷ production hours. Its example is $1,800 ÷ 80 hours = $22.50 an hour.
For comparison, the BLS median for craft and fine artists is $26.58 an hour. Machine-minute rates suit engraving services where the customer supplies the item. For your own products, count every hour you spend: design, proofs, cutting, sanding, gluing, finishing, packing and messages. Our guide on pricing custom map products turns this into a price.
Payback: a fill-in template and one worked example
The template below has a worked example next to each line. The unit costs are sourced; the volume and hours are assumptions for you to replace.
| Line | Worked example | Your number |
|---|---|---|
| Sale price | $74.99 (8×10 in, 3-layer laser-cut city map, as displayed by a US Etsy shop) | … |
| − Channel fees | $7.57 (Etsy US: $0.20 + 6.5% + 3% + $0.25, no ads) | … |
| − Plywood | $5.97 (3 × 12×12 in Baltic birch at MakerStock) | … |
| − Tube wear | $0.14 (assumption: 1 machine hour, 2,700 h lifespan scenario) | … |
| − Electricity | not sourced for CO2: kW × hours × price | … |
| − Frame, finish, glue, packaging, shipping | not included | … |
| = Contribution per map | $61.31 | … |
| × Sales per month | 10 (assumption) | … |
| = Monthly contribution | $613.10 | … |
| Payback = (machine + setup) ÷ monthly contribution | $3,199.99 ÷ $613.10 ≈ 5.2 months | … |
Our calculation from sourced prices (24 September 2026). An illustration of the method, not a prediction.
That 5.2 months assumes your time is free. It is not. The next table pays you the BLS median of $26.58 an hour first, for different amounts of hands-on time per map.
| Your time per map | Earnings per hour of your time | Payback at 10 maps a month after paying yourself |
|---|---|---|
| 1 hour | $61.31 | about 9.2 months |
| 2 hours | $30.65 | about 39 months |
| 3 hours | $20.44 | never: $18.43 loss per map |
Our calculation. Hours are assumptions: time your own work before you trust any payback number.
The lesson is not the exact months. It is that hands-on time per piece decides whether a laser business pays. Outside the US the materials are similar: a 30×30 cm three-layer map needs roughly two 600×400 mm sheets (our assumption), about 22 zł of 3 mm birch at Sklejka-Kraków or €8.60 of poplar at Zembrod.
Side income or full-time?
The census suggests most craft sellers run their business alongside other income: only 32% say it is their only occupation, and 73% of German respondents run a business of one. The same question comes up among laser owners. In a 2016 Glowforge forum thread, the opening post asked whether people planned a side business or full-time work, and whether to sell items or rent out machine time.
A side business lets you measure real hours and real demand before you rely on the income. Keep a simple log: hours per piece, sales per month, fees per sale. After a few months the payback template fills itself in with your data instead of ours.
Taxes and registration: Poland, Germany, US
These rules decide when a hobby becomes a registered business or a VAT case. We quote them only from official or chamber pages we opened; they are not tax advice.
| Country | Rule | Threshold | If you exceed it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Poland | Unregistered activity (działalność nierejestrowana) | Revenue due per quarter up to 225% of the minimum wage: 10,813.50 zł in 2026 (minimum wage 4,806 zł) | Apply to CEIDG within 7 days |
| Poland | VAT exemption | Sales up to 240,000 zł in the previous and current year (from 1 Jan 2026) | See podatki.gov.pl |
| Germany | Kleinunternehmerregelung, § 19 UStG (VAT only) | Up to €25,000 net turnover in the previous year and €100,000 in the current year | You leave the scheme at once; the sale that crosses €100,000 is taxable |
| US | Self-employment tax | Net self-employment earnings of $400 or more | File Schedule SE; the rate is 15.3% |
Sources: podatki.gov.pl (published 11 Feb 2026, updated 26 May 2026), zielonalinia.gov.pl, IHK Region Stuttgart (as of 1 Jun 2026), IHK Ostwestfalen, IRS (reviewed 27 Jun 2026).
- Poland: you can use unregistered activity only if you have not run a business in the last 60 months. Income is taxed as "other sources" on the annual PIT-36, after documented costs, at the 12% and 32% scale.
- Germany: a Kleinunternehmer shows no VAT on invoices, must note the exemption on them, and cannot deduct input VAT, so VAT on platform fees is a real cost. The scheme says nothing about whether you must register a trade; ask your local authority.
- US: the 15.3% is 12.4% social security plus 2.9% Medicare. Income tax is a separate question for your tax preparer.
How to earn more per hour with a laser
The payback table points to three levers. None needs a bigger machine.
- Sell higher-ticket pieces. Percentage fees grow with the price, but the fixed parts of your work (design, proofs, messages, packing) do not have to. At the two Etsy map shops cited below, layered city maps were displayed from $74.99 to $1,279.20 on 24 September 2026. See laser product prices and margins.
- Sell in volume to businesses. Wholesale and corporate orders trade a lower price for less time per sale. Our platform and fee comparison shows what each channel keeps.
- Cut the hours that are not laser time. For custom maps, design and proofing take time before the laser even starts. Maperivo's Laser Map Designer generates the layered map files; time your own workflow to see what that saves you.
In our own shop, Viperys Wall Art, 3D epoxy maps cost from 398 zł (20×20 cm) to 1,561 zł (45×90 cm), and cut-out maps from 220 zł to 846 zł. A lot of the work is done by hand: the water is hand-poured epoxy in three shades of blue that cures for 48 hours, and each frame is solid pine, hand-waxed. None of that shows up in machine minutes.
